Dr. Signe Svallfors is a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University, specializing in how violence and social inequality
shape health and reproductive rights in Latin America.

About

I am a Wallenberg Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Sociology and a Global Health Postdoctoral Affiliate at Stanford University’s Center for Innovation in Global Health. Starting in January 2025, I will join the Department of Sociology at Stockholm University as a Postdoctoral Fellow.

My research focuses on the intersection of violence, social inequality, and health dynamics, with an emphasis on reproductive rights and gender-based violence in Latin America. I explore questions like: What are the consequences of armed conflict and violent crime on bodily autonomy and healthcare access? How do different forms of violence—such as war, crime, and gender-based violence—interconnect? Do marginalized ethnic groups have different fertility patterns and desires compared to majority groups? What drives people to choose C-sections when they are not medically necessary? This work highlights how local contexts shape health outcomes, especially for vulnerable populations.

Before joining Stanford, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Global and Sexual Health research group at the Department of Global Public Health, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, where I continue as an affiliated researcher. I have been a visiting fellow at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and at the Center for Demographic, Urban, and Environmental Studies (CEDUA) at Colegio de México

I hold a PhD in Sociological Demography from Stockholm University from 2021, where I also earned a master’s degree in demography in 2016. In addition to my academic career, I am an avid jazz singer and previously performed at Norrlandsoperan in Northern Sweden. Outside of work, I enjoy exploring new places with my spouse Hampus and our Labrador, Cosmos..

Warm regards,
Signe
